I spent much of yesterday watching Oprah and Anderson Cooper talk about New Orleans. Its really quite pathetic that things are still the way they are 2 years after Katrina. There are only 3 hospitals open (5 stand vacant). There aren't enough teachers, but the storm gave one of the most under-performing school districts in the country a chance to rebuild, and that is a good thing. There are so many people who want to rebuild, aren't looking for a handout, but things are so completely screwed up its impossible for them to do so. Anyway...its just sad. This is a video from Barack Obama that pretty much leaves politics out so even if you don't support him, its worth a watch.
The only thing that seems to be going right is the hundreds of organizations and their volunteers who have committed time and energy to make sense out of things. Anyway, after watching Anderson and Oprah (Anderson was even on Oprah! I love that guy...he keeps it real) I spent a few minutes searching the internet for volunteer "vacations" to New Orleans and even teaching programs. I've always said I'd love to be a teacher for a few years (knowing its not something I could be passionate about forever) but I don't want to have to go back to school for it. Maybe I'll go teach in New Orleans...just something to think about.
