Mike Leach can't keep his mouth shut: Or his defense off the field. After a 59-43 loss to Texas, Texas Tech's head pirate ripped into Big 12 officials. We're expecting more of a jail sentence than a suspension after this incendiary blast.
His rant started with intimations that referee Randy Christal of Austin shouldn't have been officiating a game involving Texas.
"For one, I don't think people that live, or alumni of the team, needs to officiate," Leach told reporters. "I think there are some people (referees) that have proven to struggle in key situations that need to be eliminated.
"National championship games have actually ridden on these things by missed calls and bad officiating. If I wasn't convinced that it wasn't ridiculously obvious for you guys to go back, TiVo the game and see it, I wouldn't bring it up."
Well, at that point, it's a few thousand out of Leach's pocket. But he went on. The coach was upset over some "atrociously bad" calls during the meeting with Texas last season in Lubbock.
He went on to add, "It may be incompetence. It may be bias. I don't know."
It may be the fact your team gave up 59 and lost by 16, Mike, but we digress. You're on a roll.
"My willingness to look the other way for years at a time and not see what part I can do -- even if it costs me, even if it hurts me or whatever -- I'm not willing to take the back seat anymore," said Leach.
Oh, it's going to cost you Mike. Hurt you? Let's see how the officiating community reacts. You know how umpires shrink the strike zone against a pitcher who is bitching at them? You're about to find out.
